Here is a quick debrefing of last nights meeting
- There was good attendance and we all introduced ourselves because there was several new members attending.
- It was nice to see several members bring their kids, they can get an understanding of how much work good trails take.
- We need an older sled to raffle off, inexpensive or donated would be nice.
- Help is needed next Sunday at 9 am, one lunger track cleaning up some brush. Please help.
- Trail signs are needed on the two new rerouted trails (sandy bottom and lower street) people are getting confused and looking for the old trails. Pay attention to the signs because the trails have changed.
- Groomers need to contact Butch to go over routes to make sure we are not wasting money overlapping grooming.
- If you have any club equipment contact Punch or Butch, they would like to start an inventory and number system for equip.
- Attend the town budget meeting this Wend at 7 pm and express how you would like to see the registration fees designated for the club deposited in the clubs coffers.
- I am working on the web site. Eddie is getting updated registration forms very soon. Comment on the blogs, give me something to write about.
- Practice for one lunger race Feg 13th Several $50.00 prices will be raffled at the drivers meeting for those who pre register. This is in celebration of our 10th year.
- Dance tickets are selling fast. Save a couple bucks and buy them early. Better yet buy 8 and they will reserve a table for you. Landslide is a great dance band. Get out and dance. Bring some appetizers for the pot luck appetizer extravaganza.
- I will be contacting the local eateries to get the Thursday night supper ride going. Watch the blog for dates. We are only going to ride to restaurants that support our club.
- Traveling supper is slated for Feb 30th, only two stops this year.
- P.S. I found the loop trail, You can too, buy a local map for $2:00 It is clearly laid out and a great family ride.
If you ride the trails please join the club. If we are your patrons Please join the club. If you read this please comment.
Most importantly GET OUT AND RIDE! HAPPY TRAILS!
Letter From The President - March 2009

Turner Ridge Riders S.C
March, 2009 News Letter
Next meeting, Sunday, March 1st 7Pm Turner F.D.
From The President 2-25-09:
It looks like everyone is going to have to get there chainsaws tuned up because this last snow storm brought down a lot of tree limbs. Reports coming in, it looks like it will be awhile to get the 70plus miles of trails back in shape.
I want to thank every volunteer that helped out at this year’s One Lunger Race. The weather was perfect and we had around 2500 people come through the gate. Regrettably we had two race drivers take a ride with Turner Rescue. No major injuries, only a lacerated nose and a dislocated shoulder. Both drivers said they would be back next year. Also next year is our tenth year; we want to make it a good one so stay tuned.
Hope to see you at the meeting; we will be going over the numbers from the One Lunger race.
Trail masters Report:
The big grooming equipment is holding up good, but the smaller drags are taking a beating. If we can get through the rest of the year we will go through all the smaller drags and get the proper updates.
Logging is in process around town and some trails will be detoured temporally so watch for signs.
On Tuesday a few club members had the job of retrieving two sleds that went into the open water on Bear Pond. The two people were not familiar with the pond at night and drove the sleds into the narrows.
Once again if you need trail signs give me a call and we will get them to you. Ride safe and to the right, Butch Keene.
Activities:
Don’t forget about the Thursday night rides, check the events flyer or web site for the ride info.
Congratulations Mike Glen from Wells Me. He was the winner of the TNT Raffle. Now we need another sled to raffle off for next year, so start looking.
Saturday March 7th we will be having a trailside cook-out and bon fire just off General Turner Hill Rd. The field will be plowed so you can ride in or drive in. Ed will have his deep fried turkey there will be a grill going, bring a food donation and let’s have a cook-out TRR style.
This is a family event have the kids bring there sleds to go sliding on the hill. We will all meet up around 3Pm, have a meal and light the fire at dusk. So don’t forget Saturday March 7th 3 Pm.
April 5th is the Land Owners Supper, so please invite any and all land owners you know that our trail cross there land. If it wasn’t for these landowners we would not have the trail system here in town that we have today. If they cannot make it at least thank them with a smile.
The dinner is a pot luck style dinner it will be at the BQMC 5Pm. We are still looking for entertainment after dinner. More info to come on next month’s letter.
Trail maps are for sale at supporting businesses around town, or you can pick one up at the meetings.
We have vintage race shirts hats and tees for sale also in a few weeks this years race on DVD for sale. You can get the stuff at the up coming meeting or give Tracy Morris a call at 225-2072.
News From Bob Meyers At The Maine Snowmobile Association
A couple of issues have bubbled up over the past few weeks that seem
to be causing anxiety in the snowmobiling community. Both of these
issues will be covered in the February issue of the Maine
Snowmobiler, but given the number of calls and e-mails arriving at
the office, we thought it would be a good idea to send out an interim
update.
ETHANOL - The introduction of Ethanol as a gasoline additive
statewide has led to a lot of concerns regarding snowmobile engine
performance and claims of severe damage to engines. Congress has
mandated the use of Ethanol, and it will be unlikely we will be
seeing a reduction of it in the future. It reacts very differently
than regular gasoline with the biggest problem apparently being a
relatively short period of time before it begins to break down.
Unavoidable moisture in your tank is also a strong mitigating factor.
Ethanol is also an outstanding solvent, so all of the gook that has
accumulated in your tank over the years is now at least partially
dissolved and working its way through your fuel system. Most problems
are being reported from riders who topped off the remains of last
season’s ethanol-free gas with the new blend. In talking to the
Snowmobile Manufacturers Association and a number of dealers, we have
been unable to substantiate internet chat-room rumors of dozens of
sleds sitting at dealers waiting for blown engines to be replaced.
However if you are concerned, there are some steps you can take to
avoid potential problems. Use your gas up each time you ride. The
longer it sits in the tank, the greater the potential for problems.
Several dealers have recommended using high-test when you fill up.
The higher octane currently costs less than what we were paying for
regular last season, and it may make a difference. It may also be
helpful to use a fuel additive which can offset some of the ethanol
induced problems. The most commonly mentioned ones are K-100, and
Marine Stabil. Note that Marine Stabil is blue vs. the red that many
of us are used to. You should absolutely avoid the use of
conventional dry gas - it will only increase the effect of ethanol.
You may also want to remember this next spring when you fire up your
lawn mower, garden tractor, etc. The same problems may occur.
INSURANCE - Many of you have been receiving calls from worried
landowners following a television report Monday night regarding the
American Automobile Association Insurance Company’s decision to
cancel a landowner’s policy because he allowed a snowmobile trail on
his property. This is an isolated incident, and certainly not a trend
in the way insurance companies are viewing trails. The landowner in
question was quite angry and immediately switched companies, saving
several hundred dollars to boot!
Certainly most of you are familiar with Title 14, Section 159-A;
Maine’s outstanding landowner liability law, which for the most part
prevents any liability claims against a landowner by persons who
access their property either with or without permission for
recreation or harvesting purposes. Unfortunately, AAA and their
out-of-state insurance company choose not to believe in the
protections of this law even though, as near as can be determined,
only two cases have been filed, and both upheld the law.
I have been told by Bob Duplessie, Maine’s Recreational Access and
Landowner Relations, that they are actively communicating with AAA in
an attempt to educate them and time will tell as to whether they
change their way of thinking. The good news is that just about every
other insurance company in the state is fine with the law, and if any
landowners do have a problem, the best advice is to look for another
company - they may even find themselves saving some money.
MSA WEB SITE - The MSA web site, mesnow.com, has been down since
approximately 3:00 pm Thursday. as a result of a major hardware
failure. We have been assured that the failure is unrelated to either
ethanol or insurance issues. Our provider has been working through
the night, and we expect to be back online as soon as possible. In
the meantime thank you for your patience…
Stay warm,
Bob Meyers

New Turner Maine Ridge Riders Snowmobile Trail for Leavitt Area High School Students
The Turner Ridge Riders Club Is in the process of making a snowmobile trail for the high school students attending Leavitt Area High School. The proposed trail will be a connector from the Lower Street area trail and will end at the school property line. This is a ZERO tolerance trail. SNOWMOBILES are NOT allowed on school property, but the administration is working with the club to get our youth involved. The school and the club are working together to solve the snowmobile gear storage issue while the students are in class….more on this to follow.
